Chelsea Advances to Official Negotiations for Jorrel Hato of Ajax

Jorrel Hato

Blues step up bid for versatile 19-year-old defender, with Ajax officials preparing formal negotiations. In the latest twist of the summer transfer window, Chelsea have escalated their interest in Ajax’s teenage defender Jorrel Hato, moving beyond casual inquiries to preparing formal talks on a possible transfer. Initial, informal discussions were held months ago between Ajax’s technical director and Chelsea representatives.

Those early contacts reportedly went no further at the time, but now both clubs appear ready to sit down and hammer out the details of a deal. Chelsea have long admired Hato – having tracked him since January – and insiders say a meeting is likely soon to negotiate terms. While Hato’s official market value is around €30 million, most observers expect Ajax to demand closer to €50 million, given the Dutch teenager’s age, already substantial first-team experience and high potential. Hato has burst onto the scene as one of Ajax’s brightest young talents. A product of the club’s famed academy, the 19-year-old defender quickly became a regular in the Ajax first team.

He started almost every game in the 2023–24 season, earning plaudits for maturity and consistency even as the team struggled. An English newspaper even listed him among the world’s top prospects born in 2006. His leadership role has grown rapidly: after just one full campaign he was named vice-captain at Ajax, and in late 2023 he became the club’s youngest-ever captain in a European match. He also secured a new long-term contract in March 2024, tying him to Ajax through 2028. On the international stage, Hato has already broken into the Netherlands national team setup, making his senior debut in November 2023 and earning multiple caps at age 18. These milestones underline why Premier League clubs are circling a player of his profile. Tactically, Hato is attracting attention for his combination of skills. Primarily a centre-back by trade, he has the unusual versatility to slot in at left-back without significant drop-off – a trait Ajax have leveraged this season under new manager Francesco Farioli. Defensive analysts note that Hato is comfortable on the ball and willing to carry it forward. In fact, scouting reports place him in the 94th percentile for dribbling in his league, highlighting his ability to break pressure by running with the ball. At the same time he is solid in traditional defensive duties: “we’re talking about a player who reads the game well and uses his physical attributes in dueling, counterpressing and tracking back.” In possession he regularly plays the deep pivot role for Ajax, averaging nearly 47 passes per 90 minutes with excellent accuracy, helping to initiate build-up play. This blend of ball-playing composure, athleticism and defensive acumen is precisely what top-flight teams covet in a modern centre-back. Chelsea’s interest in Hato also reflects how he stacks up against other names linked to the club. So far this summer the Blues have been connected with central defenders like Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth) and Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace). Hato is often viewed as an alternative or complement to those targets, but he offers something different. Unlike Huijsen and Guehi – who are both pure centre-halves – Hato’s ability to cover left-back gives him an extra dimension. Analysts point out that this makes him a “different category” of signing, since he could conceivably fill two roles.

In practical terms, that means Chelsea would bolster not only the heart of defence but also add depth on the left flank, which is currently light due to Ben Chilwell’s long-term injury. The context of Chelsea’s squad explains why Hato is so appealing right now. Under head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea already have a number of centre-backs on the books. Homegrown Levi Colwill is viewed as a cornerstone of the defence and has been first-choice when fit. Experienced pros like Tosin Adarabioyo and young players like Trevoh Chalobah and Mamadou Sakho provide depth. At the same time, several defenders have seen their futures questioned. Axel Disasi was loaned out in January and looks set to leave permanently, and fellow Frenchman Benoît Badiashile has struggled with injuries and form. As one pundit notes, “players like Badiashile and Disasi could be on their way out” of the club this summer, meaning Chelsea will need adequate replacements. With those exits likely, the Blues might realistically pursue only a single marquee defensive signing in the window.

In that scenario, Hato’s unique skill-set could tip the balance – giving Chelsea not just a left-sided centre-back but also cover at left-back in one package. If talks do progress, both clubs will consider the fit. Ajax would be selling a homegrown talent who is already a club captain and has star potential, while Chelsea would be investing in a young player to bolster a defence that is still finding consistency. For Chelsea, Hato’s playing style dovetails with Maresca’s vision: he can play from the back under pressure and contribute to the build-up, much as Chelsea have tried to do in recent seasons. Moreover, adding another young defender fits the club’s broader strategy of assembling a youthful core for the future.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will make Hato their primary target or continue to explore alternatives, but as things stand they have signaled a willingness to make him a serious contender. Formal negotiations are expected to be scheduled soon, as both clubs prepare to define what such a deal would look like. With Ajax still negotiating contracts for their young stars, and Chelsea simultaneously balancing sales and signings, the coming weeks will be key. For now, the story of Chelsea and Jorrel Hato has moved from speculative to substantial: the informal conversations are over, and the two sides are reportedly about to “sit down” and work out the finer points. Given Hato’s talent and versatility, such a transfer – if it happens – could become one of the defining moves of the summer.
